What you need To Know about Finding a Set of Headphones
Just like anything in life you wouldn't purchase a new car without at least knowing something about it and headphones are no different. Many people take a crash course in whatever they plan on buying so they know what they are looking for and don't get taken. Very little information seems to be out there about headphones so we have gathered together some basic information so you can make that first purchase as trouble free as possible.
There use to be a big separation of types of headphones, but that has also changed a lot. We are going to talk about the more popular ones and the type you are most likely to encounter on your trip to the electronics store so you have a firm grasp of what you are looking for and not looking for. Earbuds are the first type we are going to talk about and many people also call these in-ear headphones. So don't be alarmed if you hear several different names used with them. Earbuds are commonly used with portable cell phones and iPods. Some of these work extremely well and sound great while others are not so great. Some big advantage of this type is they are very small and easy to transport from place to place. They give you excellent isolation from external noises. There are some down sides to them though. Many times the sound quality and bass won't be as good as the full-size headphones can give you. Longtime use in your ears can tend to be an annoyance and sometimes hard to remove.
Next up are the sport headphones and these are design with looks and performance in mind. These models come in over the head type or behind the head type depending on the design. Open back designs mean the noise blocking abilities are very limited and mainly people use these for running or walking so you really don't want to limit your hearing ability when doing those type of exercises. Advantages of this model are they usually will stay put and don't interfere with hats or hairstyles at all. Great for joggers or runners, but the downside is they aren't really durable and some models can put undue pressure on your ears.
Ear-pad headphones have many different names associated such as supra-aural, open-backed, semi-open, and closed backed, and on-ear, but basically all the same. They rest on your ears and can be inexpensive all the way up to more costly models. They are on the closed design type which means it will block out some noise, but not all of it. Upsides to this model are they usually are very comfortable to wear and less prone to overheating and some models are very portable. Drawbacks are the sound quality isn't as good as full-size models, less noise reduction.
The top of the line models of course are the full-size models which will be more costly, but you also get a lot more with the added cost. These headphones offer you the best isolation from outside noises as they enclose your ears and are better suited for home use than portable. The sound quality is also some of the best you will ever hear. Advantages of these of course would be better sounds from bass and treble. Maximum noise protection and overall better performance than the other models, but the downside is they can get hot and uncomfortable after a long time use. There are not very portable and home use is advisable only. As you can see when you make your purchase you have many different options as far as headphones are concerned. Hopefully this guide will make it easier for you to decide which is best for you and make your purchase a lot easier.
