Understanding Bluetooth Technology
When you hear the word “Bluetooth” I’m sure the first picture that pops in your head is the space-aged contraption that you find pasted to most people’s ears nowadays. If you see someone seemingly talking to him or herself while walking down the street, most likely, if you check the ear opposite to you, they are wearing a Bluetooth. These earpieces have become very popular because of their ability to let people move about with freedom – they don’t have to keep their phone in their pocket just to make sure the earbud doesn’t unplug. But did you know there is much more to the Bluetooth picture? Aside for the earpieces you’re used to seeing is a whole world of Bluetooth technology. In this article, we will explore their different technologies and how they may have an immediate effect on your life – even if you don’t know it.
About Bluetooth
Bluetooth is defined as “an industrial specification for wireless personal area networks (PANs).” It is said to provide a way to connect and exchange information between devices over a “secure, globally unlicensed short-range radio frequency,” some including cell phones, computers, printers, digital cameras, video game consoles and laptops. So where you thought the use of your earpiece was revolutionary, you see that there is many other ways benefit from the technology.
If you’re interested in knowing where the name “Bluetooth” came from, it is derived from the 10 century Danish King Harold Blatant whose nickname became the company’s namesake. They chose him as their inspiration because he was said to have united factions in parts of Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Since they have the same goal of uniting different technological industries, they decided to “borrow” his name to pay homage to his efforts, and hopefully follow in his footsteps.
So far, it looks as they they’ve been very successful in accomplishing their goal. In the less than 10 years it has taken to develop their company, they have managed to partner with companies that develop technology to create communication between cell phones and wireless-headsets, as well as wireless networking for computers that don’t have access to significant bandwidth. Also, they’ve developed ways to create communications between the mouse, keyboard, printer and computer.
As a result of their thorough work, they have grown to have over 9,000 member companies that help develop their products. The companies include leaders in telecommunications, automotive, music, apparel, computing and network industries. Now you can find Bluetooth technology from major names like Microsoft, Nokia, Motorola, Ericsson and Toshiba. Since the company has grown so big, we are often in the midst of its technology but have no idea, so now I want to take a look at some the more (and less) popular innovations that have come from Bluetooth technology.
Products and Services from Bluetooth Technology
Phone Technology – Aside from being able to use your wireless headset, you can transfer files and pictures to other devices that use Bluetooth technology. So let’s say you want to send pictures from your camera phone directly to your printer or computer. If you have a compatible printer (or adapter) you can send them to be printed right from your phone. Also, if you have a pair of compatible wireless, stereo headphones, you can listen to music on your phone – pretty cool!
For Your Car – If you have a Bluetooth stereo adapter, you can connect your iPod or MP3 player to your system and listen to all of your music. They also have a wireless GPS system available that can send information to your laptop.
Computer, Printer, Mouse and Keyboard – You can used Bluetooth technology to connect your computer to your blackberry or other mobile device and it will allow you to share your calendars and contact lists. Also, you can use the technology to have a wireless mouse, keyboard or printer, yet have everything connected perfectly. And if one of your components is not advanced enough to accommodate the technology then you can get an adapter that will work in your PC, printer, or laptop’s USB port.
What You Probably Didn’t Know
From doing more research, I found that the home or office is not the only place that Bluetooth technology can be found. Here are a few other ways the technology is being used:
Speech Recognition – Did you know that the speech recognition function found on your phone is a part of this technology? If you don’t know what speech recognition is, just remember the last time you said your friend’s name into your phone and then the phone started dialing on its own. That’s what it is! Well now, you can not only get speech recognition functions on your phone, but also through your headsets and car kits – something I didn’t know.
Blood Pressure Monitors – The company has also created an innovative way to communicate blood pressure vitals to you AND your doctor. They have developed wireless blood pressure monitors that take your pressure at home and then automatically send the information to your medical provider. This is definitely a way to give freedom to those who have an in-home nurse simply to take vitals … incredible!
Multi-Player Gaming – This is a delight to those who love the competition of playing video games against real people. Instead of having to play the games with your friend in your house, many game consoles have functions that are Bluetooth-enabled, which means you can play video games with or against people around the world in real-time. You can also chat with them via your wireless headset.
There is so much more that Bluetooth technology is responsible for; it is simply amazing what a mark they’ve left on our world in such a short period of time! Just about everything that you listen to, type on, speak through or play with is somehow related to Bluetooth technology. So the next time you feel trapped by your inability to do just about anything technological, just do a little searching and I’m sure you’ll find that Bluetooth has some type of innovation to make it all better.
