Jogging Headphones - Questions to Ask Before Purchasing

Have you already purchased the perfect Ipod and can’t wait to take it on your exercise journey with you, but don’t know what to look for in quality jogging headphones? You are not alone. Many people look at style, price and sound quality when making their choice, only to find their headphones are not conducive to their jogging needs. It can be challenging to pinpoint all the things to consider when purchasing headphones, but if you know the right questions to ask, you’ll be well on your way.

To help you narrow you search for the perfect jogging headphones, I’ve provided some questions you can ask while doing your research:

Do I want over-the-head, behind-the-neck, ear-bud, or in-ear-canal headphones?

Many people purchase standard over-the-head headphones for their jogging purposes but later complain that because they don’t adjust snugly to the head and slide while jogging. The behind-the-neck model produces similar complaints due to the inability to fit snugly on your neck. And the ear-bud headphones often have a difficult time staying in the ear. For this reason, many prefer the in-ear-canal headphones for jogging, for they typically fit well in your ear. Some have complained that they may fit too far in the ear, however. That is why it is suggested that you visit a retailer in person to make a customized headphone fit before purchasing.

Are the headphones open or closed style?

Open- and closed-styled headphones traditionally focus more on sound resonation than jogging efficiency; however, it is important to know the difference between the two before hitting the pavement, especially on busy streets. Opensports headphones have a side opening to allow sound to resonate well, simultaneously allowing you to hear noises around you. Closed headphones don’t have that opening, which helps to reduce outside noises, but also closes out sounds you need to hear when jogging. For the purpose of jogging safety, many recommend using the open style in order to hear noises around you. In addition, many say they produce a sharper sound quality.

Do the headphones have vertical or angular jacks?

While most would not think to ask this question, many have complained about it after purchasing their jogging headphones. They’ve found that the jack being vertical instead of angular can put pressure on the cord and damage the headphones. So if you are planning to clip your Ipod to your belt or place it anywhere other than in your hand when jogging, you might want to consider headphones with an angular jack. But if the headphones you are dying to purchase have a vertical jack, there are adapters available that may help to reduce the pressure from your headphones to the Ipod.

Hopefully these questions will help you to narrow your search for the most suitable jogging headphones for your specific needs. But of course, don’t stop here. Keep researching, for the more you research, the more likely you will be to find exactly what you’re looking for. Good luck and happy jogging!
